Legend of Zelda Games: Skyward Sword (Nintendo Wii)

Legend of Zelda Games: Skyward Sword (Nintendo Wii)

The Legend of Zelda games are one of my favourite series of games; mater of fact the very first game I played on a Nintendo was Zelda 2 way back in the late 80’s. I have pretty much loved all of Link’s adventures (except those god awful CDI games) and since I got my Super Nintendo and realised that Zelda was indeed going to be a series I always looked forward to rescuing princess Zelda on each Nintendo console that was released. With it being such a baron year for the Nintendo Wii I like many gamers was looking forward to the latest Legend of Zelda game, Skyward Sword having spent the better part of a month with this game I thought I would give my views on what is pretty much the Wii’s swansong. Don’t think of this as a review more of just one gamer’s thoughts on one of his all time favourite series.

Legend of Zelda games are epic and this one certainly is no exception while not the first Legend of Zelda game for the Wii Twilight Princess while it did have motion controls they were really kind of just added on from GameCube port. Skyward Sword however was made with Wii Motion Plus in mind to let you control Link like never before. I don’t want to sound negative because I really enjoyed this game it was a very good game but if I am being honest I feel many of these 10/10 perfect scores this game has been getting are really not deserving don’t worry I will give my reasons for this but first of all lets look at the stuff this game got right

Many people commented on how this Legend of Zelda game got off to a slow start, which in a way it did but I personally loved it. It was great seeing Link and Zelda act like somewhat normal kids you really got a sense of there friendship from the opening moments of the game. This was the first time I personally had seen Princess Zelda like this and I thought it was great and worked really well. I found it really cool when you first get the sword and you realise that the sword in Link’s hand is moving exactly the same as yours, no more of just waggling the Wii remote to hit enemies you can work out a strategy and hit them in certain spots. While you control the sword with your Wii remote you control the shield with the nunchuck which is also a pleasure to use. While the world may not be as huge as in other Zelda games I felt like each area had a very unique feel to it and they all looked pretty good also. Flying was one of this games big new features and the controls here I felt were pretty solid I never really had a single issue while flying.

As far as the story goes its nothing ground breaking but it draws you in and will make you want to play just that little bit more. Because of the fantastic start to the game I in all the Zelda games I have played have wanted to rescue princess Zelda more. Most of the support cast are really if I am honest just like your typical Zelda support cast, but the connection you get between Link and Zelda is so strong that most of the secondary characters seem of little importance. There is some padding that has been well reported to the story but the drive that you may actually see Zelda again after each part of the game is so strong it makes it feel like less of a chore. Some of Links weapons are great and use the Wii remote really well. His beetle and whip in particular were my favourites to use, the whip just felt so natural using the Wii remote to control it.

I like this game I really do but there are many frustrating points in this game that if I were to score it would make me drop it from a 10/10 game to a 8/10 game. Like I said I like this game and while at certain points the controls are great and make you feel like you are wielding a sword in your hand others will put you over the edge completely. Swimming oh my god words can not express how much I hated the swimming controls in this game. Instead of using the analogue stick you have to tile the Wii remote in the direction you wish to go. In theory this is great but it just feel so clunky and a real chore to get anywhere. Lanayru Desert was a section of this game that really felt like a chore to play through. It was actually a pretty interesting level with some good design but the constant running through sand (there is a map to help you to be fair) was such a huge pain it really got aggravating, a new gamer who has never played a Legend of Zelda game before may very well get extremely frustrated here. Another thing that really bugged me was the auto jumping, this has been a feature of Zelda games since Ocarina of Time but here it can get very annoying very fast. The amount of time I died because the game thought I was trying to jump of a wall, cliff or whatever was unreal. Not having free control of the camera also can be a issue especially during an intense battle you can put it behind you with the Z button but it still can be very awkward at times. These may seem like minor complaints and really they are but over the course of a long game when you encounter these time and time again then it can really start to get aggravating. I think because the rest of the game is so good is one of the reasons you notice it so much. When you encounter a new treasure Links companion will inform you of what it is, this is useful however each time you boot the game up it will tell you all the same info again. Even if you have 50 monster claws in your inventory first one you find after you boot the game up again it will tell you about it again.

Another point I want to add and I think the Legend of Zelda community is split on this one and that is voice acting. I personally feel its time to give this world a voice you wouldn’t even need to give Link a voice just let the story fold out through the other characters although I personally would love to hear Link speak as well. Text in this game is very very slow and made me constantly wish for voice acting. I know that many people are worried it would be terrible like the CDI games I would say also like the cartoon series but I loved that as a kid. One reason I have heard people not wanting voice acting in a Legend of Zelda game is because of how poor it was in Metroid other M that game was not really Nintendo’s baby and team ninja did most of the work. I feel that Nintendo would only allow voice acting of the highest quality in there franchise that really is an epic tale.

I liked the Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword I had a great time playing it I just could not get over the clear faults that this game had. Would I recommend this game? In a heartbeat I would as far as story goes I feel that this is one of the best in the whole Legend of Zelda series. The story is so strong that it helps in putting up with the games flaws. I could just turn a blind eye to the flaws and if I did then yes I would say this game without doubt is perfect, but I just can’t do it even with its flaws you will have one epic adventure and want more than anything to rescue Princess Zelda.

The Adventures of Tintin (PS3, 360,Wii, 3DS)

The Adventures of Tintin (PS3, 360,Wii, 3DS)

adventures of tintin

Xbox 360 version reviewed

Adventures of Tintin the video game is based on the high action movie from Steven Spielberg that has been wowing cinema goers for a few months now. This is your chance to play as Tintin and Captain Haddock and take them through an exciting and action packed journey.

So how does The Adventures of Tintin fare, well fairly good if I am honest as far as movie tie in games go. You can tell that Ubisoft clearly had a great love for the subject matter and it really does shine through well. Adventures of Tintin has you taking our here high up into the skies in flight levels and setting sail over the high seas as well as some tight plat forming action.

At its heart Adventures of Tintin is a platform game and quite a simple one at that. The controls are fairy tight and will not really cause you many headaches. For a kid this game would be great as its simple control scheme along with the ease in which it can be completed will make it a great adventure for them. For older and more experienced gamers Adventures of Tintin may prove to be too easy for its own good. This is one game that will give you easy achievement points but never really give you any serious challenge.

The basic 2D platform elements are broken up by a few extra game play styles such as vehicle and 3D action sections these help to break up the standard 2D formula of the game. As far as combat goes it is all handled by one button which can get a little repetitive but some enemies do require a little strategy nothing to complex but again it helps give the game a little variety. A few basic puzzles hear and there also mix things up a little bit and despite the low difficulty level stop the Adventures of Tintin from ever getting really boring. Once you have finished the game there are a few challenges that you can replay if you so wish, as well as collecting items from all of the levels. Offline co op mode really makes the game fun and adds a little bit of competitiveness between you and your friend.

One thing despite the easy difficulty level of the game that will keep you hooked is the great story along with the fantastic voice acting. The music also has that Tintin feel to it and any fans will fall in love with this game. This is one game that the story really does make you want to play it just that little bit more, it really is a fun and interesting tale that makes you want to know what will happen next. Presentation wise this is not the best looking game out there at all but it does capture the feel of Tintin and there is nothing really wrong with the graphics but nothing jumps out at you.

Adventures of Tintin is a fun game that will not blow anyone away, but at the same time this is one movie tie in that offers great fun it may be easy but it is still fun. If you are a hardcore Tintin fan or just loved the recent movie then chances are this is a game that you will enjoy. Adventures of Tintin would also make a great game for a kid or inexperience gamer to play as it is quite easy. Overall as far as movie games go this is easily one of the best over the last 12 months.

Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection

Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection

With gaming advancing so much with each passing year, it can be easy to forget where it all started, the classics that entertained us as kid and still delight us to this day. Luckily, the gaming industry loves to remind us why we fell in love with these games in the first place. We are constantly receiving re-releases of classic games, either individually through downloadable game services like Xbox Live or through game compilation discs. Such is the case with Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Just as it says on the tin, Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection collects several of Sega’s most beloved Genesis classics as well as some that were left forgotten in time. In total, 40 games have been collected for this release. Sonic sees the biggest representation with six titles under his name. His first four outings, from Sonic the Hedgehog to Sonic and Knuckle are duly present and accounted for, along with spin-off titles like Sonic Spinball.

Time has assured that people know the quality of these games, so it would be silly to go through the motions of highlighting them all. The collection does a fantastic job of presenting us Sega’s creativity during their Genesis years. You have titles like Buster Bros that have a lot of character and unique gameplay concepts, to titles with a lot of attitude like Vectorman and Comix Zone. Each and one of these titles, despite overall quality, present us how things were during the 16-bit era.

Games are emulated perfectly with nary an issue or glitch present. They are presented as they were back when they were just cartridges, without any additional content (or any eliminated content for that matter). Of course, if you are playing these games on an HD TV you are given the option of playing around with the screen settings to fit your needs.

You can unlock additional content by performing certain tasks in the games, such as achieving a special score. Some of these include even more games (like arcade versions of the original games), interviews with some of the original developers and more. The 40 games alone are worth getting this collection for, but the additional content makes it a must buy for classic game fans.

If you want to relive your childhood or just take a break for all the high powered video games of our current era in the industry, then you can’t go wrong with Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection. With all the content featured in the title you would be a fool not to get it!

Super Mario 3D Land Review

Super Mario 3D Land

It seems that Mario can do no wrong these days. With his phenomenal outings on the Wii as well as DS, Nintendo’s plucky plumber has cemented himself further into our gaming culture, all thanks to rock solid game design and a cute and appealing aesthetic. The 3DS has been out for a while now, though, and is in dire need of a big hit. Enter Super Mario 3D Land, a game that is poised to not only rocket the 3DS into the must buy lists of the season but once again put a great game in Mario’s great repertoire of adventures.

Super Mario 3D Land is unique in that it actually combines both the appealing nature of his 2D adventures as well as the complexities of his 3D adventures. Levels often switch between the two planes, giving players some of the best level design in any of Mario’s handheld games. This is where the 3DS’s 3D capabilities come into play. The game uses that feature to both immense players in further as well as a gameplay mechanic where players must judge distance between obstacles and platformers in order to get as far ahead as possible and reaching the finish line. It’s a classic gameplay formula that has been polished to a great modern sheen.

And there are a lot of levels to complete and unlock, too! Even if you complete the initial set of levels, more are waiting to be conquered once you finish the first half of your question, and other levels that are unlocked through StreetPass. Yes, if you have your 3DS with this mode on, you can exchange data with other players, unlocking new content in the cartridge.

Speaking of classic formulas, Super Mario 3D Land also pays tribute to the classic Super Mario games not just through gameplay but through the items as well. The leaf, first introduced in Super Mario Bros. 3, makes a comeback in Super Mario 3D Land. Mario gains a suit that allows him to briefly float when jumping as well as attack enemies. In addition to the Tanooki suit, Mario has the classic fireflower power up as well as a brand new boomerang suit which gives him a boomerang weapon.

With all these new additions as well as mix of new and classic ideas, Super Mario 3D Land is poised to be a huge hit. It’s a title that pays tribute to everything that made Mario so memorable in the first place while implementing many new ideas that keep it fresh but without intruding on its ideals. The 3DS is now available at a very low price, making it the perfect time to pick up one as well as Super Mario 3D Land.
