1Up Says Creators of "Bastion" Should Make Next Zelda

Category : Wii

1Up has written an article on their opinions of which game developers should tackle which upcoming games entitled “Where Do They Go From Here?”. In it, they mentioned they would like to see Supergiant Games, the creators of the hit game, Bastion, take a go at making a 2D Zelda title, despite the high budget Wii U Zelda game coming out within the next couple of years. Bastion’s main focus was on the heart-wrenching storyline and it would be nice to see story take the center stage in a Zelda game. The timeline is confusing enough as it is, and I’m positive it wasn’t planned like that, so Supergiant’s change of pace might be a relief to our insane timeline. Check out what 1Up said after the jump!

To some, it may seem like sacrilege to suggest that Nintendo outsource duties on The Legend of Zelda to another developer, but chances are that those naysayers haven’t played 2011′s Bastion. The freshman effort by Supergiant Games was an isometric action-RPG that contained a stronger atmosphere than just about anything released in the past few years. The phenomenal art direction, moody writing, and perfect narration combined to create one of those experiences that lingered long after you set down the controller.

While Nintendo is undoubtedly working on a big-budget Zelda title for the Wii U, I’d love to see them give Supergiant a chance at crafting a 2D installment of the beloved series. Bastion was obviously inspired by the timelessness of A Link to the Past (one needs only to look at The Kid’s varied arsenal that slowly grows as you progress through the game), but what made Supergiant’s downloadable title truly special was its marriage of addictive mechanics and an amazingly told story. Despite Zelda’s ever-growing mess of a timeline, the series has always given narrative a back-seat role. How great would to have a Zelda title that contained the poetic prose and heart-wrenching turns that peppered the entirety of Bastion? That’s something that would excite me much more than a prettier iteration on what Ocarina of Time delivered 14 years ago.

I think it would be a great thing to see Supergiant Games make a Zelda game. I’d be excited to play a game with story as the frontal aspect. What do you guys think of 1Up’s statement? Tell us in the comment’s bellow!

  • I really liked bastion, but i think only Nintendo should make Zelda games. Zelda is a first party series and should be made by first party developers not third party.

    • Capcom did The Minish Cap and Four Swords. GREZZO did Four Swords: Anniversary Addition and Ocarina of Time 3D. Flagship (a branch of Capcom) did Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages (two of the best Zelda titles out there). The director from the Oracle games was also the director for Skyward Sword. Nintendo does not make every Zelda game.

  • I think that would be great as well, but I just don’t like the idea of someone else making a Zelda game

    • Capcom did Minish Cap and that game was great!

  • They’ve had 3rd parties work on Zelda games before, like Capcom.

  • ya bullshit. that wouldnt ever happen, because of nintendo and bastion creators, AND THE FACT IT WOULD SUCK.

  • NOOOOOOOOOO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO i look up images and it looked nothing like zelda is supposed to NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XO

    • It’s not Zelda? First, if they make a Zelda game, they’ll probably try to mimic existing designs by Nintendo. Second, Zelda has so many different “looks” that you cannot claim that it is “supposed to” look like anything.

  • Seriously? Bastion is waaaaaaaaaaaay over rated. It’s pretty much Magicka but not as fun and with no multiplayer emphasis. I think Capcom should return (or Retro if they’re not working on what I hope is Metroid 3D).

    • Capcom’s shit now, they would probably fuck it up.

    • Have you played Bastion? Because, it sounds to me like you haven’t. Having played the game I agree with 1up it’s a great game and it would indeed be cool to see their version. Plus Capcom’s too busy ignoring Mega Man….

  • Either one of two things will happen, it’ll be a complete flop or they do better than what Nintendo has ever done. It brings a game with a story line, answer’s to questions and a mix of Zelda and with a hint of fable.

  • The Timeline isn’t confusing. I thought Hyrule Historia was clear on where the games fit. Yes, there’s the Downfall Timeline, but that’s only confusing until you realise that Skyward Sword, like Ocarina of Time, has two endings.

    • Honestly, the Timeline never once confused me until people started saying that SS has two endings. Besides, unless a future game retcons it, Hyrule Historia shows us in no uncertain terms that SS has one ending.

  • I haven’t played Bastion, but I’m all for Nintendo passing the baton onto other worthy developers. I love Nintendo and think they are brilliant at what they do, but I’m not too happy with the way they’ve handled story in recent years. For someone who is drawn to Zelda for the depth of the story and imagination, it is frustrating when they seem to deliberately thwart the efforts of fans to craft a grander story than what exists solely within the games. Other than Hyrule Historia, Skyward Sword is a classic example of this. So many potential tie-ins to Twilight Princess and The Minish Cap, and most of them were completely ignored or even flat-out denied. I want to see a Zelda game that embraces the history of prior games and yet isn’t just another sequel, but builds off of existing lore that has yet to be addressed. If Supergiant Games is the one to do that, then more power to them.

    • Could you imagine having a narrator narrating an epic Zelda Adventure, that would be way cool.

  • If Capcom and Grezzo could do Zelda, then Supergiant could definitely give it the extra umph it needs, and its about time we got a brand new story to be told in the games anyhow.

  • I can’t understand the ignorance of all these “zelda fanatics” saying it should stay 1st party when capcom has made games like Oracle games which were great and refreshing to the franchise in the way that the quest changed due to how they were connected (though I don’t know how they compare to LA, which is the engine it runs off of).

    • im a zelda fanatic and I think nintendo needs to pass the baton to some western devs. its becoming more and more clear that japanese devs are starting to lose touch with gamers. Not to say they aren’t still making fantastic games, Skyward Sword was great. But I DO want a more story driven zelda. its my fav series of all time with an amazing mythos that needs and deserves more exploration. I think other devs could do that.

  • I think it could turn out to be great if Nintendo worked on a Zelda project in collaboration with Super Giant Games.

  • Pfft, no way. Gameplay should remain the the biggest factor. They’re called videoGAMES, not videostories, for a reason, you know.

  • No more 2D Zelda’s!

    • i wish i could vote this down twice

      • @DementedAvenger27: I just did it for you. You’re welcome.

However, I must confess, that 2D games doesn’t fall in my favor. But still, A Link to the Past was purely awesome.

        • thank you sir.

so why not the big budget movie zelda for wii u and the indie film 2d zelda for 3ds, plus a majora’s mask remake along with the VC releases of oracles.

    • we should go back to 2d zeldas we haven’t had one in forever, and the fans obviously dislike it. maybe as a compromise, zelda could take a few tips from Pokemon Black and White and give a 2D game alot of depth and camera angles. that would make a 2d zelda game perfect for the 3DS (note: camera angles to add depth is the ONLY thing zelda should take from the recent pokemon games. please don’t hate me for mentioning them)

  • i agree, past stories have been amazing but they all mesh together because of the timeline issue. i think if a game had a strong enough stand-alone story, we wouldn’t be comparing it to OoT and finally have another Zelda game to remember on its own.

  • I thought Bastion was very good, but not this godsend to games so many people seem to think it is.

  • i compleatly agree, bastion was an awesome game, and the storytelling was sublime, just imagine the storytelling of bastion, and the mindblowing stories of zelda toghether, it would be a must have title

  • The only problem with that is there’s only about 7 people in SuperGiant Games, no lie. I’d really like to see that, don’t get me wrong, but it probably won’t happen.
